What is
social media?
This type of
media can be seen as the modern way in which people communicate. It is
interactive, immediate, compelling and gratifying. The real world tells us that
traditional methods of communication are outdated, slow and less understood.
Now, the internet brings instant gratification for many people, young and old,
and provides answers to questions and problems that would usually have taken
days or weeks to sort.
People are
communicating like this all the time. They are sharing their experiences and
values with each other. They are making others aware of their likes and
dislikes and, moreover, are telling others how they achieved things and what
products or services they did it with. They are doing this via traditional text
on forums and via chat rooms, they are doing it via videos and images and they
are doing it via audio and other shared media.
If a person has
bought a guitar then they will share this information with their social media
friends. That is not, in itself, groundbreaking. But what IS original, is the
fact that they will not only share which guitar they bought but also which
company they bought it from, what discounts they received, what the customer
process was like and how they dealt with any difficulties. The list will go on
as their friends respond with questions and queries regarding their new
purchase. Think further afield as all materials we own started out as a purchase
at some stage or other.
In short, they
will share with their friends (and using social media "friends" means
"the world") exactly how you, as a business, fulfilled their needs
and expectations for each and every one of these purchases. The comments and
statements will be "warts and all" in that there is no reason to hold
back the good or the bad.
Social media is
therefore a way that people share their daily experiences, whether it being
"getting out of bed" or "I bought a fender Stratocaster from Big
Guitars - great place, great service." Are you part of this discussion?
