It is important
to remember that unless you have a highly specialized product, customers have
many different companies from which to choose when shopping. Customers also
want to know that the companies they deal with stand behind their products and
services. When a customer buys a product and then has problems with it, they
expect the company to help resolve their problem.
Another
important factor to keep in mind is that an unhappy customer will tell many
more people about their experience than will a satisfied customer. A customer
that is dissatisfied with how they were treated by your company is likely to
tell many people, which will only serve to spread the negativity about your
company.
Studies have
shown that getting an unhappy customer back is many times more difficult than
keeping a customer happy in the first place. It is also much more difficult to
attract a new customer than to keep the customers you already have. This is yet
another reason why companies should always strive to treat every customer
right.
An excellent
practice that many successful companies have used and still use is the
referral. If the company can't provide you with the product or service that
you're looking for, but the representative knows where the customer can get it,
he or she will send the customer to a competitor and lose out on the potential
sale of something else. However, by doing that, the customer generally
appreciates the service and often times will come back to purchase something
else due to the level of support.
One way to
improve your company's customer service is to put yourself in your customer's
shoes. For every situation you encounter with a customer, think about how you
would want to be treated in a similar situation. Good listening skills are also
vital when dealing with customers. Instead of immediately attempting to fix the
problem the way you think it should be fixed, take the time to hear the
customer out to find out what they really want. Many times what the customer
wants most is to just be heard and understood.
